Choosing your first steelpan

Start with the music you want to play, where you will play it and the support you need.

Listen to the instrument.

There is no single maintenance schedule for every steelpan. How often it is played, how it is transported, the environment it lives in and changes in tone all matter. Keep it covered when not in use, handle it carefully and avoid placing objects on the playing surface.

When something sounds or feels different, ask an experienced tuner to assess it. Specific advice should always be based on the actual instrument rather than a generic rule.
